In a typical hotel search, I usually exclude hotels with less than a 3-star rating. With two small kids, I appreciate cleanliness and safety. However, Monterey is one of those areas with few choices in that "in-between" range, so I took a risk and booked a King room at the Stage Coach Lodge. The result? A comfortable night's sleep at a fantastic rate! After an efficient check-in, we entered room 108, which is quietly tucked away in the corner of the motel. It was so clean that I wasn't compelled to impulsively tear off the bedspread, and my son's white socks remained white! While the TV had less than a few dozen channels and the toiletries were minimal, the TV was a large flat-screen and the toiletries sat on a granite bathroom countertop! It's all in the details, and the owners didn't miss a thing: curved shower rod, large-carafe in-room coffeemaker, good WiFi, decent-sized in-room fridge and microwave, and no fewer than 3 overhead lights and 3 lamps to illuminate the room. Plenty of floor space gave my kids room to play and allowed me to set up the little one's portable crib without the chance of stumbling into it in the middle of the night. With the exceptional Dennis the Menace Park and the Monterey Sports Complex (indoor pool/waterslide and 2 hours of daycare for 5 bucks!) nearby, the location perfectly suited our family plans for the day. Upon our return home, we realized we forgot a beloved stuffed animal in our room. No problem, said the helpful gentleman on the phone. He'll ship it back to us right away. Now THAT is service! A 5-star experience at a 2-star price? Yes, please!
